CCI Withdrawn

After five months of collecting signatures in all kinds of weather, the California Cannabis Initiative (CCI) has been withdrawn.  CCI was an initiative aimed at the November 2010 ballot that would have legalized marijuana in California for adults 21 and up and guaranteed civil rights for cannabis consumers.  Although not enough signatures were gathered to place the CCI proposal on the ballot, the campaign has been a success on many fronts.

Integrity. The CCI campaign utilized a 100% volunteer workforce.  No signature gatherers were paid to circulate the CCI petition.

Education. Thousands of California voters have learned of CCI’s main planks while visiting their favorite local venues.  Some of those proposals include releasing of pot prisoners if cannabis is their only crime. Earmarking tax funds for healthcare, education, environmental programs, public works and state parks.  Mandating decriminalization of marijuana in every city and county in California.  Equalizing adult’s rights to grow, possess, transport, use and sell marijuana.

Fun. Volunteers have reported that CCI was one of the most enjoyable campaigns that they have worked on.  It was written and staffed by sincere true believers, and attracted exceptionally intelligent individuals.

Grassroots Organization. Hundreds of volunteers got involved and thousands of California voters have registered to vote for the first time in their life after being inspired by this campaign.  This is a new voting bloc that can be activated for marijuana legalization and civil rights protection in the future.

Thank you to all who contributed to this effort.  If there is enough interest, a new campaign may commence for 2012.

New CCI Forum, Signature Drive Continues

Please register and login to join the discussion in our new forum. County Coordinators should start a new Topic on the Counties board with their County in the title to establish communications with local volunteers.

No one has taken up the offer to revise and re-file our initiative to legalize marijuana in California.

Meanwhile, word on the street is that the TaxCannabis initiative has collected enough signatures to qualify for the ballot in 2010. Congratulations to the professionals and volunteers that got this big job done for TaxCannabis in just a couple of months.

Remember, on the CCI team Peter Keyes got 1,622 signatures in about two months, Tim got his 1,000 in about 2 months, and a fellow named Gordon did too. Larry Laws in SoCal says he has 6,000 and the TaxCannabis team has gotten it done in about 2 months. As of this writing we still have MORE than 2 months left to qualify for the 2010 ballot. In fact there are 77 days left, and the busy shopping season is just getting started. We still have the best initiative and time to get enough signatures to qualify for the 2010 ballot.

Please register and login to join the discussion in our new forum. County Coordinators should start a new Topic on the Counties board with their County in the title to establish communications with local volunteers.

Friday, 11/27/2009 there will be a meeting at 6 PM at the Yes on California Cannabis Initiative headquarters, 2993 Fulton Ave., Suite D, in Sacramento for all interested in actually legalizing cannabis in California.

Time to Pause, Revise, Re-file, and Reset

A frank assessment of the Current Count of volunteer Coordinators, Circulators, and Signatures shows we are coming up short of the goals needed to put our initiative on the ballot. At this point it is time to pause and consider our options.

A popular idea is to revise our initiative to reflect the feedback received to date and re-file it to reset the calendar. We do have time to make these changes and this action not only improves our initiative but also provides more time to organize and raise funds.

Improvements will include stronger protections for medical cannabis, require regulation and taxation like beer and wine for commercial adult use sales only, and with help from our friends at VoteHemp, our revised initiative will have more comprehensive language for industrial hemp.  Our proposal will still have no possession limit on personal use or grow space, ban discrimination against cannabis consumers, expunge criminal cannabis records, require labeling, and repeal the criminal cannabis laws.

The current version, AG# 09-0022, will be withdrawn and a new timeline will be approximately as follows:

Filing deadline 11/21/2009
AG Title & Summary 1/21/2010
Circulate Petition until 6/21/2010
Election 11/2/2010

This plan of action requires that an accountant and election law professional join our campaign and that we raise sufficient funds to cover basic costs of a volunteer petition campaign. We have just a few days to gather these basic resources.

In the event we are unable to gather the basic resources needed to proceed another option would be to focus on the 2012 election to bring our proposal forward and use the time until then to build the organization.

The final option would be to terminate the Yes on California Cannabis Initiative committee and leave the matter to others to resolve.

Vote with your wallet because at the end of the day those are the most important. We also need an army of volunteers and the Current Count reveals that there are plenty of Chiefs and not enough Indians. Coordinators need to recruit volunteers! In fact, each Coordinator needs to organize about a dozen very ambitious people and everyone needs to gather an average of 1,000 signatures each. Less of an effort will bring us right back to where we are now.

Therefore, some goals are established that must be achieved BEFORE we re-file.

Goal 1: Coordinators need to affirm their commitment and we need about two dozen willing to publish their contact information and hold regular meetings in their respective counties.

Goal 2: We must raise or get commitments for $25,000 to cover basic overhead costs for the petition campaign phase.

Goal 3: We must engage an accountant and election law professional to help.

The final language of the revised initiative will be posted on the website and distributed to this email list soon. Please make a commitment and take action, real marijuana legalization will not be sponsored by a corporation. Real marijuana freedom will only come when The People rise up and take action. The internet will help our effort, but signatures must be gathered in person, time must be volunteered, and money must be donated.

53 Percent Support Legalization

53 percent support legalization of marijuanaA Gallup Poll released October 19, 2009, actually understates what petitioners know about how voters feel on the issue of marijuana legalization.

"Americans are no more -- and no less -- in favor of legalizing marijuana when the issue is framed as a revenue-enhancement tool for state governments. Regardless of how the question is asked, 53% of Americans living in the West -- encompassing California, where the issue could be on the ballot in 2010 -- support legalization."
